Conversation 1/21/09

gss-090120-inauguration-07_grid-6x3Me: I’m still in shock.

Friend back in NY: It’s crazy, right?

Me: Is this the feeling white people walk around with their whole lives? Like throughout history?

F: I know what you mean. I stood up for the National Anthem the other day.

Me: Word? Hand over the heart, and all that? Damn, everything has changed…hasn’t it?

F: Yeah.

Me: We’re gonna need a whole new vocabulary to talk about America…

F: For real. I feel so damn motivated. I feel like I’m incapable of procrastination right now.

Me: Yeah. I feel so…man. This is ridiculous! Every time I see him I feel so damn proud I start crying.

Friend: Yeah, it’s crazy!

    Dear World:

We, the United States of America, your top quality supplier of the ideals
of liberty and democracy, would like to apologize for our 2001-2008
interruption in service. The technical fault that led to this eight-year
service outage has been located, and the software responsible was replaced
November 4. Early tests of the newly installed program indicate that we
are now operating correctly, and we expect it to be fully functional on
January 20. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage. We
look forward to resuming full service and hope to improve in years to
come. We thank you for your patience and understanding,

    Sincerely,
    THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    Thanks TLR (-:
My apology to the world would read a little differently, though.
I’m not ready to don the blindfold, yet (-:
Our hypocracy is too obvious to ignore and is a lot older than 8 years.
But I like the spirit of your apology… (-: So I second it.

Sorry world. Thanks for standing by. We now resume our program (of forming a more perfect union) already in progress.

    (-:

As much as I would like to be excited about the new president, he is just another politician out for power and influence.

You might be right…what gets me about him is not so much what I think he’ll do but what his election says about Americans and the kind of country and world we (most of us) want to live in. That the dream of MLK wasn’t just a black man’s dream, but an American Dream. You might find it hard to believe but I think most black people had no idea that it was true. Including myself. And that I have been proven wrong in such an overwhelming display of solidarity…that this day has come in my lifetime…damn there I go again…

I’ve had to keep a box of tissues handy since the inauguration…I’m a wreck!
gotta keep pinching myself these days

      Sorry

I cried when I watched it too – I cry at almost all ceremonies – but I have to say I was out shopping yesterday and I saw quite a few black Americans who seemed pretty damn happy – it was very nice. The air over here has changed. It’s definitely lighter. It feels good.

    Hey Reason2

I know what you mean…it really does change EVERYTHING!
America is a new country…a lighter country…a greater country
…my country, tis of thee…da da da (damn gotta learn the words now…never bothered to commit them to memory) (-:

PS: Better believe I knew the Negro National Anthem though LOL
    Lift every voice and sing
    til earth and heaven ring
    ring with the harmony
    of liberty
    Let our rejoicing rise
    high as the listening skies
let it resound loud as the rolling sea…

Words I love…

Everybody is a star
I can feel it when you shine on me
I love you for who you are
Not the one you feel you need to be
Ever catch a falling star
Ain't no stopping 'til it's in the ground
Everybody is a star
One big circle going round and round
