黄人 Kijin (Yellow People) conversation 5/21/09

(The following excerpt from a conversation took place in Japanese)

“You’re having fruit for dinner??”
“Yeah…I love fruit in the summer…”
“Do all black people like fruit?” she asked.
“Do, what? What kinda….? I don’t know. I guess so…I don’t know. Do all Yellow People like rice?”
“Yellow People?”
“Yeah. Like yourself.”
She looked at her skin like it was first time she’d ever seen it and scratched her head.

Weird! My wife is Japanese-American and the mother of her ex-boyfriend, an Indiana white trash trailer-park type, once asked her if they have fruit in Japan. As in, does it exist there.

There are so many misunderstandings based on fruit. 🙂

I’m fascinated by Japanese perception of gaikokujin skin and hair color. For the past month I’ve been asking friends what my hair color is. The response has been “yellow” or “brown”. They’re always surprised when I tell them Americans call it red, and when people see Asuka or other red haired anime characters, Americans think of my hair color. Some have told me that Asuka’s hair isn’t natural, just like purple and green hair.

I’m still trying to wrap my mind around that reply.

I would have paid to look at the face of that person…

I don’t mean to be a spoiler, but the reading for “yellow people” (黄人) is “oujin”, not “kijin”. The word “kijin” (奇人) in japanese means “eccentric person”.

Words I love…

Everybody is a star
I can feel it when you shine on me
I love you for who you are
Not the one you feel you need to be
Ever catch a falling star
Ain't no stopping 'til it's in the ground
Everybody is a star
One big circle going round and round
